George Hay consecrated Bishop

After his time in Preshome, in 1767, George Hay was appointed to be

priest in Edinburgh and procurator of the Scottish Church. A year later, aged 39, he was appointed coadjutor vicar apostolic to Bishop James Grant of the Lowland District. It took another seven months to arrange for him to be consecrated bishop in secret. This took place at Scalan, in the upstairs room at the far end, on Trinity Sunday, 21 May 1769. (Your scribe first visited Scalan as a student from Blairs for a Mass to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this event. The 250th is coming up fast!)
