Friars and Canons

October 9, 2018

Distinct from the Monastic Orders were the Mendicant ( literally “begging”) Friars espoused a wandering, preaching lifestyle of Gospel simplicity, only separated by their colour: Greyftiars (Franciscans), Blackfriars (Dominicans), Whitefriars (Carmelites) and the Redfriars (Trinitarians). There were also the Canons, (Augustinians and Premonstratensians), who had a stronger emphasis on the Liturgy, especially the Liturgy of the Hours, the seven times they gathered in their choir stalls each day to chant the psalms and other scripture and prayers which make up the Prayer of the Church even today.
